Some cards are meant to be opened.
Others are meant to be experienced.
Today’s project is a little bit of both.
The Idea Behind the Design
I used the Retro Suitcase and Sentiments Stamp & Die Set by Sheri Ballantyne for Spellbinders to create something interactive and meaningful—a card that tells a story the moment you see it.
Instead of building a traditional layout, I designed a faux envelope directly into the card base, creating a pocket that holds the focal element: a detailed, dimensional suitcase.
And yes—it slides in and out.
Interactive + Functional
The suitcase isn’t just decorative.
It’s removable, which adds an interactive element that instantly makes the card more engaging. But beyond that, it also serves a second purpose:
- The back of the suitcase is left blank for a personal message
- It can double as a tag or keepsake
So instead of writing inside the card, the message becomes part of the design itself—something the recipient can hold onto.
Details That Tell the Story
The suitcase was built up with layers to give it that classic, vintage feel—complete with straps, hardware details, and travel-inspired accents.
To complement it, I paired it with a textured background and a bold frame to ground the design and give it structure.
And then there’s the sentiment:
“We’ve all got baggage. Together we can carry it.”
Simple. Honest. Real.
It transforms the card from something decorative into something meaningful.
Why Interactive Cards Matter
Interactive elements don’t have to be complicated.
Sometimes, it’s as simple as adding movement—something that invites the recipient to engage with the card rather than just look at it.
This design is a reminder that:
- A card can be more than a message
- It can be an experience
- And sometimes, even a small gesture can carry a deeper meaning
I love projects like this because they blur the line between cardmaking and storytelling.
It’s not just about the supplies—it’s about what you do with them.
And sometimes, all it takes is one small interactive detail to turn a card into something unforgettable.
