AECP Level 1 Final Challenge – Part 2

Easy Way to Create Boxes

Howdy! Welcome to the Part 2, the very final part of AECP Level 1.

Today I will show you how to quickly and easily make boxes for your gifts. I learned this technique of making boxes a while back just by watching an old video on YouTube. Unfortunately I was not able to find it and reference it here but I have been using this technique for years now and I will explain it the best way possible.

You will have to do some simple maths calculations but rest sure it is easy! There are two styles of boxes we use all the time: square and rectangular and there are two “formulas” to creating them. The first thing that you would want to do it measure the item that you want to make a box for. Once you have your measurements then choose which box you need to make. The first and the last measurements are going to be the sides of your box (or the depth of your box) and in the middle you want to put the measurements of your item. When making lids I always add about 1/8″. This will ensure that the lid fits nicely over your bottom piece.

Square Boxes

For the Top/Lid:

Depth+Size of Item+1/8+Depth=Paper Size

For the Bottom:

Depth+Size of Item+Depth=Paper Size

Rectangular Boxes

For the Top/Lid:

Depth+Width+1/8+Depth=Paper Size

Depth+Length+1/8+Depth=Paper Size

For the Bottom:

Depth+Width+Depth=Paper Size

Depth+Length+Depth=Paper Size

When I am making my boxes I always like to create a sample box first and write my measurements inside. I often use inexpensive paper for this that I have accumulated over the years so I do not have to waste my premium paper for this. Once I cut my paper to size, I then scored it at how deep I wanted my box to be, e.g. my item was 5 3/4″ x 4 1/2″ x 1″ (length x width x depth/side); I then just simply I added my measurements together and I had my paper size. I then scored it at 1″ because that was how deep I wanted my box to be, and I scored my paper on all four sides. For my lid, I like to make sides smaller so you can see the bottom of the box, but that is optional. I then cut and trimmed my paper and folded the tabs. And now, it was time for decorating the box. TIP: If you wish to embellish or decorate your box, do not assemble it yet. It is much easier to decorate your box once it’s laying flat.

To decorate my boxes I chose gold and white ribbon; this ribbon was perfect size and it was looking good on both of my boxes and I simply used some liquid glue to attach it to my project. If you are wondering, I am using Art Glitter Glue, it is a wonderful adhesive! This glue is meant for paper, but, I tested it many times and it glues paratactically anything! I always attached my embellishments to my projects with this glue and never had any issues. I decorated my box with die cuts using Fancy for You Die by Altenew and I pre made some wax seals that I made by using Altenew Wax Seal Stamp – With Love. Then I assembled my boxes and that was it! One thing I like to add to all my boxes is tissue paper. I think it gives a very sophisticated and finished look. I like to also add a little piece of washi tape. And for my project today I chose Gold Foil .5″ Washi Tape from Altenew.

And that was is folks! With this post I am wrapping up AECP Level 1. I will be starting Level 2 soon and I cannot wait to see what is to come next!
