Every once in a while, a project comes along that feels extra magical, and this card is one of them! 🧜♀️✨ The August Wax Seal Club from Spellbinders includes a gorgeous mermaid tail seal, and the moment I saw it, I knew I wanted to create something playful and unexpected. Instead of a standard A2 or rectangle card, I decided to ride the waves a little and make a circle-shaped design—but with an interactive twist.
This project was also a great way to use up scraps from my other August club cards. I had leftover BetterPress circles, and rather than letting them sit in a pile, I turned them into the base for this card. With a little ink blending, some hand-drawn gold waves, and a splashy sentiment, those leftovers transformed into something completely new.
To give the mermaid tail some personality, I trimmed the wax seal and tucked it into a hand-cut slit in the card front, making it look like it’s leaping out of the waves. The circle slides open to reveal space for a note, or you can keep it simple and turn it into a gift tag. Either way, it’s a fun and versatile way to stretch your supplies while letting that wax seal shine.
Card Details
Shape: A circle card base, created from leftover die-cut circles.
Wax Seal: The August club’s mermaid tail—stamped in teal and brushed with metallic highlights—was trimmed out and tucked into the design for a “splash” effect.
Background: Ink blended in shades of aqua and teal for an ocean feel. I drew gold waves with a gel pen for shimmer and movement.
Sentiment: “Even little fish make big waves”—perfect for the theme and heat embossed for shine.
Interactive Element: Using an X-Acto knife, I cut a slit so the circle slides open. Inside, you can write a message or leave it blank if you’re using it as a tag for gifts.
Finishing Touch: A sheer white ribbon tied at the top, finished with a little star embellishment to complete the ocean vibe.
