Unexpected Color Combinations – Episode Three

Unexpected Color Combinations – Episode Three

Hello dear friends, and welcome.

Today I am showcasing a new episode of my little series “Unexpected Color Combinations”, this is episode three and I picked turquoise and burgundy.

Such a cool combination I must admit. When I was in high school I had this awesome zip up  sweater that was something in between light blue and turquoise  and it had burgundy drawings on it. At first I was not so sure about the colors, but that color combination is what actually drawn me to it and it soon became one of my favorite garments, so much that I had to do a color combo episode on it.

As usual, I am focusing on tags here, but if you would like to see the entire project, please head over to my YouTube channel (click HERE).

To create the tags I used Altenew tag dies (click HERE) and the star of the show is the phenomenal Build A Garden set called Blooming Delight (click HERE).

One more thing I used here the wax seal that is no longer available on Altenew. Did you know that Altenew was one of the first modern stamp companies to have wax seals? I am not entirely sure why this never took off, but their wax seal stamps were

incredible. The reason I know this is because I gave classes on wax seals a few years back, way before they became so popular.

And this is how I created my tags.

I used Salvaged Patina Distress Oxide Ink to color the tags. I started off with the turquoise paper, but I ended up coloring instead. I then stamped the image first with Altenew Permanent Black Ink and since I wanted just one flower stamped on the tag, I used a Q-Tip, previously dipped in rubbing alcohol to remove the excess ink from the stamp and customize my image that way.

For stamping I used the Stampwheel from Altenew (click HERE) and this tool is a game changer!

Did you know that you can use the sticky mat from from the Stampwheel for ink blending and stenciling? It makes everything so much easier. You actually do not have to protect your fingers because the paper and the stencils get stuck on the mat and you are free to go! And if your mat loses its stickiness, just wash it with some dish soap in lukewarm water and let it dry and it will be like new! It is made out of high quality photopolymer and it will remain sticky.

So, for stenciling, I used Aged Mahogany Distress Oxide Ink only. I just started off with a little bit of ink and keep adding more and more pigment as I moved on with the layers. I love this look, and this proves that you do not have to have a lot of inks to create cool projects.

To create wax seals I used two color wax beads that closely matched my project. I happened to have the perfect color match, but if you do not have wax that closely matches your projects, you can easily change the color of your wax. I made a couple of  videos on how to easy create custom color wax and this technique will most definitely save a lot of money, time and room in your craft room.  Feel free to check these videos out:

  1. Crayons & Wax Seal Stamps
  2. Oil Pastels & Wax Seals

For melting my wax I use electric wax seal melting tools (click HERE). These tools are incredible and much better than the traditional candle, and not to mention safer.

I started off with the Burgundy color wax. I simply pour the wax on my silicon mat, and stamped. Once the wax was cooled down, I used my detailed scissors and trim off the flower I then inlaid the flower back into the stamp. For this technique to work, you need to make sure they are seal is still a little bit warm to the touch, but not hot, and press your cut piece formally into the stamp. I then poured turquoise wax on my silicon mat and stamped again. As a result, I got this beautiful, inlay wax seal stamp.

And once my wax seal was cooled down, I simply glued it to the center of my flower.

And my tag was done.

The tag and the card match each other so well and are such a good addition to any present.

I love having a card and a tag match each other and when everything is so nice and cohesive.

And that is all for now.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions, I am always happy to help.

Thank you for taking the time to see me and I will see you soon with a new post.

Happy Crafting!
